1. Concepts::

There is one truth in investment theory: Buy the best product within your budget! Buy the best product within your ability. Moreover, there is no exception to renowned watches. If you can afford a watch, of course you need to buy the best one. But, what is the best watch? There are several types considered to be the best watches, including:

(1) Easy to recognise: Expensive watches which are known to everyone, like Omega Constellation gold watches.(2) Easy to sell: Watches which are praised by many people or are easy to sell, such as Rolex Daytona.(3) Rare: Handmade and personalised watches that are difficult to make, such as Piaget Limelight watches, and Patek Philippe Complicated watches.(4) Good investments: Watches which 'are said' to increase in value after you buy them, i.e. watches which can make you money.(5) Personal taste: Watches only you like, which your friends don’t understand.

There should be few watches for which all the above boxes can be ticked. Watches that are easy to recognize are not rare; those that are easy to sell are not welcomed while those that are worth investing in do not really make money. However, one thing for sure is to choose what you like. As a result, an expert here is going to give you, a watch lover, some advice:

(a) .If you prefer new watches to old ones, please select your favorite from popular brand watches. In this way, the price difference of the watch between its original price and the price you are going to sell at will be slight.(b) .If you have special tastes and ideas about watches and do not care about the price after 6 months, please buy a rare handmade watch. Maybe its price will be very high after 10 years. The value will not decrease and relies on your vision and luck. But the most important thing is that what you choose is what you understand and like, isn't it?(c) .If you just want to buy a watch, and with no considerations for feelings and preferences, we suggest you buy a simple, practical and good quality watch. Instead invest in stocks and real estate, where you can make more money and it's easier.

2. Passion:

When it comes to buying a watch, to put it simply, you need to have passion. A renowned watch is a piece of art, and a luxury. A renowned watch doesn't belong to commodity goods, natural resources, funds, or stocks. If you see it as an investment, you are unlikely to end up making profit. Please be aware.

One senior friend, who says he is crazy about watches, started to collect photos and news about every kind of watch since he was little. Back in those times when Taiwan was lacking in commodities, this hobby was really special. He also wrote down his wishes in a scrapbook, such as: buy a house for his parents, travel in Europe, and so on. After he grew up, each time he fulfilled a wish, he always bought himself a watch he liked. Later, he became a successful executive, and continued investing in watches, as he connected buying watches to achieving his lifetime dreams. This is his passion. Another musician friend, who is one of the best international musicians, wears simple clothes, is full of knowledge, and is humble. What makes him most proud is not his talent, but a house of renowned instruments and renowned watches. His simple and elegant house reveals his taste. He said when he went to a city where he had a performance, he didn't like to spend free time on sightseeing, and playing around, instead, he took his instrument with him to visit his old friends. They would visit watch stores together and talk about life and watches. No one can compete with this kind of passion.

3.Collecting watches with a plan:

When you have the passion and budget, how can you make collecting watches more interesting and meaningful? And how can you increase their value when you want to resell?

(1) By function: For example, many friends specifically collect diving watches, alarms, and tourbillons from every brand. They can enjoy and compare with each other's timepieces. This way of collecting is fun and scientific.

(2) By brand or series In the case of IWC Pilot watches, there is a seconds sub-dial, stopwatch, large diameter, and other functions. From the Mark I Pilot watch to Mark XVI Pilot watch, there are loyal fans everywhere. As for functional watches, many experts particularly collect Patek Philippe Calatrava watches; and for Rolex, most people love to collect historical versions of GMT Master or Daytona watches.

(3) By year Some friends particularly like to collect simple automatic calibre watches from the 1970s to 1980s. The craftsmanship and technology at that time could compete with those right now, but their watches are cheaper, with excellent handiwork, and whose future market valuation is promising. For example, Longines, Omega Constellation, or Seamaster watches during that period of time were typical fashion items with the ability to retain their value.

(4) By historical significance For example, Hong Kong Handover memorial watches and Olympic Games memorial watches all have significant historical meaning.

(5) By special style For example, Cartier magic watches, Gerald Genta cartoon watches, Vacheron Constantin Mercator watches, and so forth.
